U.S. National Public Radio has finally fired its psychiatrist talkshow host, Dr.  Frederick Goodwin of “The Infinite Mind”. The New York Times reports he potted $1.3 million in kickbacks from pharmaceutical companies — much more than NPR ever paid him to host the show no doubt — during his 7-year tenure. “The fact that he was out on the stump for pharmaceutical companies was not something we were aware of. It would have violated our agreements,” the producer claimed. But that’s nonsense.  Goodwin himself claims he told them, and individuals and organizations like MindFreedom’s David Oaks have been complaining about him to NPR for years. “We’re proud that MindFreedom International has been speaking out about Dr. Fred Goodwin’s misbehavior since 1992 in Washington, D.C. during one of our many national peaceful protests of the American Psychiatric Association. Critics of Dr. Goodwin like courageous psychiatrist Peter Breggin, who is seldom heard on NPR, have been vindicated,” MindFreedom stated in a release. NPR’s turnaround is more likely related to bad press from recent Congressional hearings on the extent of such kickbacks in the psychiatric industry.
