Hospitals that Allow Murder

Although this prominent case about nurse John Cullen murdering at least 40 patients has all the hallmarks of a one-of-a-kind sensationalist story, medical doctor and ethics professor Carl Elliott explains why we should see it in a broader context and be more concerned about what it shows about how modern hospitals work. And although in Canada our hospitals do not have the same level of profit motive, it’s important to note that many of our governments have been in recent years changing the funding models, in order to “de facto” force Canadian hospitals to operate more like private ones. Also worthy of note is that Canada’s health professional regulatory bodies are equally secretive and self-protective, and Canadian hospitals even more so (even without the same levels of financial profit motives). It’s generally easier to get info about hospitals in the U.S. than Canada.
