New Canadian book of critical thinking on psychiatry

A new book called Mad Matters has been released from Canadian Scholars Press. It’s a collection of writings by academics, psychiatric survivors, activists and others taking critical perspectives on the psychiatry industry, that gives a fascinating overview of the emerging field of “Mad Studies” and of the state of activism in Canada on these issues. I wrote a chapter called, “Pitching Mad: News Media and the Psychiatric Survivor Perspective.” In it, I explore why it’s so rare for mainstream North American news media to cover mental health issues with any reasonable degree of awareness about the serious civil rights issues involved or the extent of pseudo-science in psychiatry and psychology.
